Coping With Grief: 5 Lessons Learned From Death

coping-with-grief

Losing a loved one is arguably the most painful thing that anybody can go through; despite this, coping with grief is an unavoidable part of life that we will all experience at some time or another. For some, it will be something that they will have already experienced multiple times. For others, it may be something they are yet to experience. But it doesn't matter how many times we lose somebody close to us, the grief that is experienced as a result is always just as real.

However it should be noted, that no matter how strong the pain of losing a loved one may be, what is most important is that you had someone to love at all. As Lord Tennyson’s quote famously goes, ‘better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.’ So, no matter how hard it always may seem at first, life does go. This is inevitable. The important question to ask yourself once the grieving process has begun to slow, is: what has this person had to teach me in both their life and their death?

What we are taught by the people that we love during their lifetime is unique to us all. But here are 5 lessons learned from death:

1. Be Grateful

If there is one thing that we can learn from the death of another, it is to be grateful. Too often it can take the pain or shock of a loss to make us wake up to how good we really did have it.

So don’t wait around for a big wakeup call to tell you that you should have been grateful. Be grateful now. And be grateful for the people in your life, the love that you feel, the little things that make you feel good to the core. Be grateful for the people that you have lost and the people that are still living with you.

Every moment, every person, every experience, and every memory is precious.

Here are 10 Ways That You Can Increase Gratitude.

2. Let Nothing Go Unsaid

One of the biggest regrets of those who lose somebody to death is that they never said what they needed to say when they had the chance.

Whether you are angry at the person that you love, have unresolved issues, need their forgiveness or forget to tell them exactly how much you love them, make sure you say it today. You never know when you may lose the opportunity to do so.

3. Tomorrow Is Not Guaranteed

Death can be expected or unexpected. Either way, there is no knowing when the final curtain will fall. So as cliché as it may sound, really do live every day as though it is your last. There are no guarantees in life.

Make every moment count and as difficult as it may be, try to take nothing for granted. We shouldn’t live in fear of death. But, we should definitely use its presence as a reminder that life is for living now not in the uncertain future.

4. Be True To Yourself

Following on from the message that life is in fact, very short, comes the lesson that we should always be true to ourselves.

A life of no regrets is one that was lived in alignment with the true self. Sometimes, when somebody in our life dies it serves as the reminder that we need that some things just do not matter. For example, the opinions of the people around us; whether or not we pass that exam, get that job, get into those tiny skinny jeans etc. etc.

A death can remind us that our happiness and being true to ourselves is what is most important of all. Why live a life to please others, if it means having to be somebody else?

5. Life Does Go On

The most important lesson that we can learn from the death of a loved one, is that life does go on. At first, when somebody we love deeply has to leave us, it may seem as though the world has come to a complete standstill. You know that life as you knew it will never be the same.

When we lose somebody we love life never will be the same. But it is important that you know that it can still continue. And in this one-off opportunity that is your life, you need to remember that why you are still here you need to be living your life to its fullest.

If there is one thing that you can learn about yourself after the death of a loved one, it should be that you are a lot stronger than what you realize. Take these lessons and apply them to your life – let them help you to find your way through the grief, to celebrate both your life and the life of the one that you have lost. Living your life to the fullest is the greatest way that you can honor those you have lost.
